Claire, the posting you made regarding the Penske Truck Leasing employee who passed away and the assistance that the company provided his family, (including the procession of trucks at his burial) made its way to me this morning. I will share it with Roger when we meet later today as I know he will appreciate it. I thank you posting it and for one of our associates sending it to me.

All the best,
Bud

A touching email about Penske April 21, 2008

Hey all: I got an email (Saturday April 19th) that really touched me and I thought I’d pass it on to you on this site. A “Dialed In” listener emailed me to tell me about something maybe Roger Penske is not even aware of. One of the employees who wore the Penske name died and because of the company he worked for was buried properly. The man’s roommate contacted me to have me get some kind words to Roger Penske. I suggested that I post the information on this site so that all kinds of people get to see it and the listener agreed. I will also pass the note on to folks at Penske so that Roger sees it.

Today we buried my Roommate, who worked for Penske as a diesel Mechanic in Williamsburg the last 2 years of his life, his name was Jimmy Thrower, He never Met Roger, but the camaraderie and the well run business was the best job he had in many a year. Jimmy had some troubled times in his personal life and family life, and he hadn’t made arrangements but had expressed his wishes, When his estranged family went to make arrangements it seemed many of his wishes may have to be sacrificed, but the saving grace was the classy people at Penske had a life insurance policy on their employees. while it didn’t cover everything it made the wishes of Jimmy within reach. At the cemetery while waiting for the ceremony the first emotional moment was when the guys from the local Penske Shop showed up in a parade of Penske Yellow truck bumper to bumper in caravan. This gesture brought me to tears as well as others. I have thanked the local guys but I asked a friend in Claire to let Roger know we appreciate his classy organization and the way they treat their employees, as well as how good a team of guys he had here locally. It helped more than Roger will ever know and I thank him from the bottom of my heart as does his family. Roger has always has shown in the past in any circumstance he is a class act and I thank him and his management team for creating an atmosphere where employees are taken care of as well as appreciated. His local Manager even spoke out at the service. I’m not sure what else to say except The Captain has all my respect even more then ever before.

From Greg in Oregon:

Claire-

If the driver of another car,Kasey Kahne, had suspicions, how did the Owner and members of team not recognize their driver was using heroin? What caused Kasey to be suspicous? Test ‘em all!

You Rock!

Greg in Oregon
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

CBL to Greg: Well some other drivers say that some folks act suspicious even when they are just being normal and not under the influence. Kevin Harvick said that Fike drove a couple of races for him and there was no reason to believe by how he acted that he was under the influence. He did not notice it in his encounter’s with him. Dale Jrr said that if the second worse thing (after someone actually driving under the influence) is wide speculation in the media that casts doubt on the sport then wipe all that out and test the drivers randomly if need be. Thanks for the email. See Dale Junior’s Comments below:

Dale Earnhardt, Jr Quote Transcript : (Phoenix International Raceway) Thursday, April 11:

ON NASCAR HAVING REGULAR RANDOM TESTING. “If the public were to ask that question, NASCAR’s reaction would be to start testing people. They’ve always sort of had that style of management if you will. Once a complaint gets loud enough, they sort of take reaction to it. I wouldn’t have problem with random drug testing if it’s important to the integrity of the sport. That’s what’s important to me and maybe it would be able to help maintain that. We’ve always sort of had it differently than other stick and ball sports because we drive cars. It’s just overall handled differently. People would assume that steroids and things like that wouldn’t be an advantage here and I don’t see how they would but I suspect the only reason a guy would do that in this profession is just physical appearance of his own perception of himself. I don’t think it would be an advantage inside the car. Recreational drugs have always been a fact of life and people always say you’d be surprised but I don’t think it’s a problem here. I don’t think it’s an issue here but maybe you’d be surprised, I don’t know. If NASCAR wants to go in that direction, I guess the second to worst-case scenario is for speculation to run rampant in the media.

“The worst obviously is for that to be happening. If that’s the second worst for us to be speculation and be running rampant in the media, let’s just squash it, fix it, make a statement with testing and what not.”

From Gary in Texas:

Claire

First of all I would like to say I really enjoy your show. You have the greatest job in the world and you are also very good at it. Thank you so much for bringing us all of the great inside information that you do each and everyday on Dialed In.

I became a NASCAR fan about 10 or 11 years ago because of Jeff Gordon. I kept reading about this young driver winning all of these races and I found it fascinating so I begin to take a closer look. This coincided with the track opening in Texas (I am from Austin Texas) and so I decided to take in a race.
Wow !

I was totally hooked.

Now I cannot get enough information about all of the things that go on in the sport. It fascinates me to no end that teams can make the slightest adjustment like a 1/2 pound of tire pressure to a car and this will make a huge difference in it’s performance.

I like Jeff and I think he is a class act but I also like all of the drivers. I am really pulling for Junior this year and would love to see him win a championship.

I do have a question that I have never heard asked or answered since I became a fan and I thought you would be the one to ask.

How does the electronic timing work on the cars ?

I know each car has a transponder but where are they located ?

Wouldn’t they all have to be in the exact same place and the exact same distance from the nose to be accurate ?

What happens if they get damaged

Just something I have always wondered and hopefully you can help me out.

Thanks again and keep up the great work.

You do a wonderful job of keeping us all informed and we all appreciate it !

Gary Stevens
Austin, Texas

Gary: Thanks for the email.

CBL to Gary: Thanks for the email – I’ll definitely do a story on this but for the quick take – yes…there is a specific spot for the transponders and it’s adjacent to the fuel cell. There is a specific measurement from the nose of the car to where the transponder must be located and all of them in all of the cars are located in same location. NASCAR gives them out to the teams each race weekend. The guys in the garage tell me that by the time you have damaged your transponder you are usually toast as far as getting the car back out anyway because of where it is located. If the transponder is damaged somehow and does not work- then there are five scorers who time by hand and the average of what they clock would be used. Hope this helps and I’ll get an interview with a longer story so you can listen on air. Thanks – good question.

Mail Box (4/8/08)

The Gordon Fans began emailing me as soon as the race was over. Below is a Gordon fan up on the wheel about Sunday’s race:

Jeff Gordon 101 here – Did you get a chance to talk to him today? Was he as upset as I am right now? So here’s the skinny – we are now 14th in points with an average finish of 19.71 after today’s waste of time. I know that it is still early in the season, but there’s a part of me that is kind of scared about not making the chase?! Today was also another prime example of what I have been trying to figure out for a long time…the 48 and the 24 share a garage and I would assume share information between the two as to what works and what doesn’t work…but yet today the 48 was once again way so much better than the 24 was. How in the hell could Stevie be that far off on the set-up?! Yes I understand that some drivers like their cars a little loose and some drivers like their cars a little tight, but give me a break – I don’t think their was a driver out there today that could have done any better with Gordon’s car than he himself did. How in the hell can you be that far off on the set-up…I just don’t get it!!! There are only two tracks out there that Gordon hasn’t produced a victory and Texas is one of them – I just don’t get how they are unable to master Texas nor Miami. Am I whining? You bet I am whining – I just cannot accept a Sunday when not only do you come in last place, but you are not even in the ballpark as a contender for a top ten, a top five, and a prayer couldn’t even get you a win?! I suppose on the bright side this was only his second 43rd place finish in his entire career, and we are still somewhat early in the season. Let me send the 24 car around 20 more times for our 101st victory and maybe one extra time for today’s race since Stevie obviously didn’t have a clue as to how to send the 24 car around.

I received this response to reading Ann’s email on air on “Dialed In” on Monday 4/7/08

THANK YOU ANNE FROM INDIANA!!! Finally there’s someone out there who shares my thoughts about Jeff Gordon. I didn’t get a chance to listen to your whole show today so I really don’t know what kind of feedback Anne’s e-mail got from your listeners, but it was so nice to hear her e-mail and very nice to know that there are others out there who share my thoughts about the number 24 car. She hit so many nails on the head with her e-mail. Is she just ranting and raving? Is she just so passionate about the number 24 car that she might be a little biased and her rage of passion has clouded her judgment? Are her claims true or are they false? Who actually knows the answers to these questions…and who even really cares…it’s just nice to hear from others that they share the same passion for Jeff Gordon as I do!!! I went to bed mad Sunday night and woke up mad Monday morning. Yes, I am a realist and do indeed understand that Gordon cannot win every single Sunday…and I understand that some Sunday’s will be bad and other Sunday’s will be great…but to have a car like Gordon had at Texas was simply unacceptable. Whether your driver is a superstar or not – you still want your driver to be somewhat competitive…and this past Sunday at Texas Gordon was no where close to being competitive…yes I am whining, but I feel like I have every right to whine after the Texas race…to immediately start dropping like a rock the very second the green flag was displayed is something that us Gordon fans are not used to and we have a hard time accepting a finish of 43rd. To come in under a caution to make changes only to fall even further back was another thing that puzzled me about Sunday’s race at Texas. I am proud that Gordon’s demeanor is calm, cool, and collected – it says a lot about the professional that he truly is – but had it been me I would’ve had a team meeting come Monday morning in which there would be a lot of questions asked as to “why” and someone damn well better have some good answers if there job was important to them. As to Anne’s e-mail…thanks again to Anne for not holding back and throwing everything that she did out on the table. Please send the 24 car around 20 more times to get us to 101 wins.

Emails on Jeff Gordon’s last place finish in Texas
Ann in Indiana emailed me and was up on the wheel:

Hi, Claire:
OK, I’ve kept quiet as long as I can stand it. And so, I’m back (much to everyone’s chagrin). I am not going to keep putting up with this 24-48 situation without expressing my opinion (as whacked as it may be). I’m standing up for my driver!

Chad Knaus needs to be answerable for what happened to Jeff this weekend- and if Rick Hendrick keeps sitting back and letting this happen, then Jeff Gordon needs to find someone else to drive for.
Rick, how bad do you still want Jeff to drive for you? If he is still of value to HMS, then you had better figure out what is going on in your garage. You admitted two years ago that you didn’t give Jeff what he needed to win. Well, guess what? As long as Chad runs your shop, Jeff will never get what he needs. But you’re probably so busy worrying about Jr. that you are ignoring what is being done to Jeff. If you still care, this will change. We fans will understand loud and clear your concern- or lack thereof- by your actions.

Question, Claire: Can you do some in-depth fact finding? Do the cars have serial numbers or some kind of car ID? If so, I would be interested to know if Jeff’s car this weekend was the same car Jimmie had at Vegas. The announcer at MRN when he was interviewing Jeff in the garage intimated as much- and Jeff didn’t deny it. And some other questions I would like someone at Hendrick to answer: How is it decided who gets which car? If the cars are “identically prepared,” how could Jeff get such a piece of crap to drive while Jimmie’s car was so much faster and better handling? If HMS is so good and so professional, how could this 43rd place happen- unless it was intentional? And who decides which car Jeff would get? Do the drivers test them ahead of time? Do they not see the cars until they arrive at the track? Who makes the decision on car assignment if the cars are “identical”? Had Jeff driven this car before- and where? Was it brand new? Which backup car did Jeff get assigned? Had Jeff driven it before? Where? When? I would really like answers to these questions from Hendrick- and preferably not from Chad. So, can you find out if the car Jeff was stiffed with at Texas was Jimmie’s crap car from Vegas?

If my car had been as bad as Jeff’s in practice, I would have just told PopTarte to put it back on the hauler and get out the backup car. It couldn’t have been any worse and might have been better. Sometimes I think Jeff just seems to be too trusting (and too ready to blame himself) and actually believes Chad when he says the car would get better with a few of the 48’s adjustments. When is Jeff going to figure out that Chad would probably sell his own momma down the river to get what he wants? Does Jeff- or anybody- really think that Chad is going to tell the 48’s secrets (no matter what Mr. H wants)? (And what mysteriously happened to Jr.’s superfast car?) (And we all saw- once again- where ol’ Rick parked his carcass for the race.) Chad probably knows that Mr. H. will not tolerate him screwing over Jr.- but he knows Jeff won’t say anything because he’s part-owner of the 48.

Well, yesterday I saw Jeff come closer to going on a rampage at any time since he shoved Kenseth at Bristol. To say Jeff was livid was an understatement. All weekend he had been pleading for help- and NO ONE LISTENED!!!!! I think he was mad enough to take LeTarte’s head off. But his anger was most likely misplaced. It seems that Steve is just one of Chad’s lackeys. We all know who really runs the Hendrick shop. How much is Jeff willing to put up with? I would have made my extreme displeasure known- and in a way they would not misconstrue. I would have personally taken a sledge hammer to that COT hunk of junk until there wasn’t enough of it left to ever drive again. And then I would dump it in Chad’s front yard for making me look like a fool. What the hell! Jeff’s already going down the tubes. He should have put in for the money Gossage was offering and tossed his helmet. He should have launched it into orbit- or used it on his crew for target practice.

Stevie had better get his head out of Chad’s ass and get with it before we Gordon fans go berserk on him. He’s going to keep screwing around and his next race job will be turning a wrench at Salem Speedway on weekends.

I thought maybe I would get over this Chad-Jimmie thing, but it’s the same old scenario every week. “Let’s see how we can sabotage Jeff this weekend.” Somebody needs to be answerable. A great champion is being dissed by his own organization.

And by the way- the AFLAC car wins the AFLAC race? And this is not fixed? Tell me why not. (So I don’t know why I even bother. Sorry about this rant- but I need to get all of my fury out of my system.) And without a green-white-checkered ending, this race would have been a MAJOR YAWNER.
If I hear Jack Roush whine one more time after winning all of these races, I’m going to find him at the track and puke in his hat.

Unfortunately (for everybody) returning,
Ann from Indiana

P.S. Feel free to tell me to go away.

From C. Gold: Regarding Kasey Kahne in the Samsung 500 at Texas:

Claire: I’m not sure when you will be able to read this. Kasey Kahne just hasn’t had that spark, like he did in the 06 season. I’ve written numeriously to you. Mostly I’m taking cheap shots at the Hendricks team or Tony Stewart. None of that today. I sit here listening to your Monday April 07th show. All I ask is what will it take for Kasey Kahne to make it into victory lane this year? You seem to be know the weekly in’s & out’s. so I need to pass a 4 leaf clover to the #9 team?

( CBL Note: Kasey began feeling a “bad vibration” in the car after a pit stop on lap 283 – he came into pit road for a fix but the vibration persisted – diagnosis “broken splitter brace” – He finished in 25th three laps down)
